"The past twenty-five years in Southeastern Europe have witnessed extensive efforts by states, intellectuals, parties and ordinary citizens to re-evaluate, rewrite and revise the past. [...] Yet, these new narratives frequently did not serve open and diverse reflection but sought to justify new/old narratives. [...] This special issue examines these efforts on three levels: official new narratives, remembrance in popular culture, such as music and film, and larger social processes of identity construction."
