This book addresses an important historical question--the reasons for the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991--by focusing on the lives of a diverse group of writers who challenged Soviet ideological orthodoxy and promoted ethnic nationalism.
Through a series of micro-histories, this book examines competing Marxist approaches to antifascism during the 1930s in the USSR and select European countries during the Spanish Civil War. It explores the forces that divided Marxist antifascists, fragmented the Popular Front, and melded antifascism and anti-Communism by the late 1930s.
