Print for the Pocket

Print for the Pocket investigates how early nineteenth-century Americans living in a rapidly expanding country understood and utilized the material features of small, portable books. Analyzing archival print artifacts alongside major and little-known texts, this study demonstrates how the physical portability of books carried cultural meaning and supplied both practical and conceptual resources for emergent forms of spatial and social management--from the frontier to the Civil War camp.
